    Glazing

We also offer clear dip glazing on cone 6 clays at an additional cost ($2 per piece), which may save you time on pick-ups and drop-offs. The glaze offered is Tucker’s 602T Porcelain Clear. We highly recommend making test tiles using your own clay to test this glaze with us before committing to application on your work – not all glazes fit all clay bodies.

  • You may have heard – we love wild clay! To share in the magic and joy of this process, we fire wild clay. Here are some important considerations:

    • Test tiles, coils, or small pinch pots are required before firing larger, significant pieces made of wild clay.

    • Wild clay must be contained in a lipped bowl or plate made of a known clay to catch any melting that may occur.

    • Wild clay found near saltwater bodies need to be contained in a lidded box made of a known clay. Sodium will cause clay to bloat and melt prematurely.

    • It’s recommended to fire your tests at bisque temperatures (i.e. cone 06) before proceeding to higher temperatures to find the melting point.

  • Our electric Evenheat 4320 kiln has been retrofitted with a Bartlett V6 controller.

    • Maximum interior dimensions: approximately 17" wide x 17" high x 17" deep

    • Shelf size: 15.5” diameter

    • Bisque temperature: cone 06 (1828°f)

    • Glaze temperature: cone 6 (2208°f)

✽ cone temperatures can be adjusted up to cone 10 if renting a full kiln.

    • Please drop off your work in boxes with your name written clearly on each box.

    • Each piece requires initials or a defining maker’s mark.

    • Your work must be fully dry (bone dry) to be fired. This will be at our discretion.

    • The maximum thickness of clay that we can fire is 1/4".

    • Enclosed clay pieces require an air hole.

    • Bottoms of glazed pieces need to be wiped clean of glaze. Unwiped pieces are subject to a $2 fee per piece.

    • Sometimes it’s hard to estimate how much kiln space you’ll need. Batches are subject to increase in fee if more space is required than stated while refunds will be given if less space is required. In the case of the former, images will be provided.

    • Accidents happen. You agree to the cost of replacement of kiln shelves ($25 half shelf or $50 full shelf), elements ($300), kiln brick ($150) or any kiln damage due to improper preparation or treatment of clay and/ or glaze. Images of any damage will be provided.

    • We will care for your work like it’s our very own. However, firing involves many variables that we cannot control. Unfortunately, we cannot be held responsible for pieces damaged through the firing process (i.e. shattering, breaking, cracking, melting, dripping glazes, etc.) and in such cases refunds will not be granted.
