  • You may have heard – we love wild clay! To share in the magic and joy of this process, we fire wild clay. Here are some important considerations:

    • Test tiles, coils, or small pinch pots are required before firing larger, significant pieces made of wild clay.

    • Wild clay must be contained in a lipped bowl or plate made of a known clay to catch any melting that may occur.

    • Wild clay found near saltwater bodies need to be contained in a lidded box made of a known clay. Sodium will cause clay to bloat and melt prematurely.

    • It’s recommended to fire your tests at bisque temperatures (i.e. cone 06) before proceeding to higher temperatures to find the melting point.

    • Please drop off your work in boxes clearly labeled with your name.

    • Each piece must include your initials or a distinct maker’s mark.

    • All work must be fully dry (bone dry) before firing. Determination of dryness will be at our discretion.

    • The maximum clay thickness we can fire is 1/4". Pieces exceeding this thickness will not be fired and will be returned.

    • Double-wall or enclosed pieces must include an air hole.

    • The bottoms of glazed pieces must be wiped clean. Unwiped pieces will incur a $2 cleaning fee per piece or be returned unfired at our discretion.

    • All work must have at least 1/8" of unglazed surface at the base to allow clearance from the kiln shelf. Flat ornaments must also remain unglazed on their edges. Pieces without this allowance will incur a $2 cleaning fee per piece or be returned unfired at our discretion.

    • If you wish to fire pieces glazed on all sides, please provide your own specialty kiln furniture.

    • Kiln space is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If your work requires more space than estimated, additional fees will apply. If less space is used, a refund will be issued; however, refunds do not apply to full kiln rentals. In either case, images will be provided for reference.

    • In the event of damage to kiln equipment, you agree to cover the cost of repair or replacement as follows: Kiln shelf damage: $5 per piece; Shelf replacement: $30 (half shelf) or $60 (full shelf); Element replacement: $350; Kiln brick replacement: $200. Images of any damage will be provided.

    • We take great care with all work entrusted to us. However, firing outcomes cannot be guaranteed due to the many variables involved. We cannot be held responsible for pieces damaged during firing (including shattering, cracking, melting, or glaze drips).
